Five Obstructions: Tom’s final 5

with 10 comments

Here are the final five:

Thanks to everyone who watched, kibitzed, lurked, cheered and jeered.

Matt and others will be disappointed to learn that I talked to my friend in the newspaper and he too advised me against running the imageless strip. In a perfect world, maybe, but I didn’t want to be too strenuous on morning commuters, their first cup of coffee in their hands, on their way to deal presumably with some power-hungry jerk who signs their checks…

So the strips that will run in the Metro will look like this:

I myself am disappointed that I didn’t catch it in time to run the silly heart one sooner in the loop rather than at the end, but I working on a less than 24 hour deadline for some of these strips to get them in. Newspapers are transient- no one will care or note it a few months from now. If I publish these in a collection, the imageless one will go back in.

Special thanks obviously to Matt Madden- Matt this was fabulous, THANK YOU!

Readers interested in future strips will also be disappointed to learn that next week’s are going to be VERY DUMB (to over compensate to my audience) but I hope to bring some of the new strange structures in immediately. And it is very much my medium and long-term goal to incorporate ideas from this week into my future work…

Ok! See you all at Mocca. I’ll have these originals with me, if you’d like to stop by…

Off to the Goddard. (“Word to the mother” in avant-garde-speak.)

  1. Oh no! In fact the paper nixed all of Wednesday through Friday! I’m doomed…

  2. *sigh* – because they were too out there, or because of the guns and dolphin shooting?

  3. Definitely the out there-ness

  4. Maybe I should follow Thor’s suggestion and have you quickly do a few strips in Cathy style…

  5. I like the final tweaking of the last strip. the last panel is better and the sunset adds to the elegiac feel of the tanka.

I think you should lay the completed strips out in the correct reading order. I think maybe you meant to do that because the fourth strip runs first but wasn’t the image-less comic supposed to run after the 20-panel strip?

  7. The strips work really well as a group. You really pulled together all those constraints to make something that feels unified. Too bad they won’t all be running.

I’ll stop by at MOCCA and say hi.

  8. Yeah, I picked up today’s paper expecting to see one of those and was briefly disappointed and then realized that no sane newspaper would print these, they’d have the commuters of NYC howling for your hide.
